Summer is a time for relaxation and fun, enjoying the warm weather with friends and family.  It is also a time that certain crimes see a significant increase and arrests climb.  The rises in crimes tend to happen in colder climates more, most likely due to the change in temperatures.  Climates that stay warm year-round see less of an increase.

One major factor is alcohol consumption.  There are lots of summer parties or perhaps you’re just having a few beers out on the boat, the result is often a DUI.  Outdoor gatherings often involve alcohol and warm temperatures may cause us to consume more ice-cold drinks.  Additionally, there’s usually a higher police presence during the warmer months, especially during summer holidays.

Other factors for an increase in crime is that kids are out of school, people travel more (empty houses), windows are often left open to beat the heat, and excessive heat causes tempers to rise.

Other crimes that are more common during the summer are speeding, public intoxication, trespassing, damage to property, assault and battery, burglary, larceny, reported sexual assaults, reported domestic violence assaults.

How You Can Protect Yourself

Drinking responsibly or not at all is one way to protect yourself from getting a DUI, having an accident, or being the victim of a crime.  Of course, you should never drink and drive, and if you’re going to an event where you will be drinking alcohol, arrange for a designated driver ahead of time.  Plan for an Uber or Lyft.  When you’re at a party or a bar, never leave your drink unattended and make sure you see the drink being made.

If you’re going on vacation, be sure to set a few lights on timers and have any mail or deliveries put on hold during that time.  In some areas, the local police department will do check-ins if you notify them that you won’t be home or you could have a friend do it.  If you’re leaving a vehicle in the driveway, it might be a good idea to have your friend move it around so it’s not obvious that no one’s driving it.  If you are planning to be away for an extended period, it may be a good time to invest in a security system with cameras that allow you to keep an eye on your home from your mobile device.

Lock your windows and doors at night or when you go out, especially those on the first floor.

If you plan ahead and you are always aware of your surroundings, you can spend summer having fun with your friends and family, instead of behind bars or buried in heavy fines.
